The primary goal of this site for photographer Melissa Black was to create an interesting photo viewer. The photo viewer was created with XHTML/CSS and JavaScript, making used of the jQuery library. The site also includes a simple admin system for uploading, resizing and organizing the photos.
This weekly photography competition site is a personal side project that started as a result of a bet between myself and the Photo Editor of City on a Hill Press. The site includes an AJAX voting system and a simple PHP admin interface for contestants to upload their photos.
City on a Hill Press (CHP) is the campus newspaper for the University of California, Santa Cruz. I was hired on to bring the newspaper to the web. In two years I was able to establish CHP's web presence and make it profitable for the organization. In addition to the easily updatable site for the weekly paper, I also designed sites for special issues, including Primer, the traditional annual first issue of CHP, for which I made use of the Google Maps API.
In addition to a website with information about the sorority, Tri Chi also asked me to create an internal system to make communication between the sisters easier. To do this I created a simple message board and a mechanism for uploading notes from the weekly meetings.
During my employment by Professor of Computer Science, Suresh Lodha, this project flowed out of our research into web 2.0. The goal was to create a site which would create a forum for discussion on topics relevant to the University of California, Santa Cruz. To find discussion topics, we search through an XML feed from Google News, extract news stories about the University and ask students to discuss the topics. The site also includes ratings on professors and an event calendar.

While employed by Professor Suresh Lodha I did work on the UC Atlas of Global Inequality, creating a user interface for visual displays of global poverty indicators.
Before going to college I spent a year making pizzas, sandwiches and burgers at Steve's Place Pizza, Pasta & Grill. Upon arriving at college I earned a living my first year as a video slave at Blockbuster Video and then Hollywood Video.
My love of writing and politics meets my passion for web design at my blog where I discuss current events, politics, the web, programming and muse on life in general.
